about the author

Dr Cameron Stelzer

“Exciting, enthusiastic, engaging, energetic and really tall!” is how teachers (and six year olds) often describe the fresh-faced Dr Cameron Stelzer. Don’t be fooled by his ‘Dr’ title, Cameron is not a grey-haired college professor but a sprightly author, illustrator, qualified teacher and lunchtime handball enthusiast.

Cameron has a passion for creating picture books and inventing wonderful and appealing characters. His series of Stroogle books are colourful stories that use enchanting rhyme and vivid watercolour illustrations. The first Stroogle adventure was written and illustrated during a year Cameron spent working at the Natural History Museum in London. The Stroogle character was inspired by the many wondrous creatures the museum held in its collection.

Six years after releasing the original Stroogle book, the exciting new story, The Stroogle and the Golden Dragon is the new fifth instalment in the popular series.  It was created in conjunction with a new how-to drawing book, How to Draw Dragons. To find out more about Cameron’s books please visit the books page.

Cameron has also worked extensively with community groups, public libraries and regional art galleries. For his creative efforts and community involvement he was awarded an Australia Day Cultural Achievement Award.

In his little spare time, Cameron likes to play a variety of sports such as touch football, swimming, cycling and running (with a three wheeled pram these days!). Cameron is always keen to 'have a go' and encourages young people to do the same. Cameron’s extensive qualifications include a Doctorate of Visual Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts with first class Honours, a Graduate Diploma in Education and certificates in Small Business Management and Workplace Training. Cameron was born in 1977 and has lived in many places around Australia (and overseas) but now happily resides in Brisbane with his wife and daughter.
